Highly regarded as one of the most outstanding athletes of his generation, George Spiro excelled in both football and basketball during his time at Central. An athlete and a gentleman, he rose from the streets of Manchester's inner city to become one of the most respected businessmen in the community. As a three year varsity football player, he was selected to the Union Leader All State Team as well as the All New Hampshire Team chosen by the New Hampshire Sportswriters' Association. Spiro's prowess on the field extended onto the basketball court where he played Varsity for four years. Coached by Joe Bronstein, Central Class of 1928 and a well-known educator himself as well as a Hall of Fame honoree, Spiro, as captain, led Central to its fifth State Title, garnering nineteen wins and two losses. Spiro was also selected to the Class A All Tournament Team and was captain of the team which was invited to the New England Tournament at Boston Garden (where Central suffered a heart-breaking two point loss to North Adams High School). One of a select few in Central history to make first teams in All State teams in both football and basketball, Spiro went on to serve in the United States Navy, then returned to establish Goldenrod Candy Company and later the Goldenrod Drive-In, still operating today. Many Central students have had the great good fortune to be employed by Spiro, who was not only an employer but a kind and generous mentor, a gracious host and a devoted family man to both his own family as well as his Central Family. Spiro and his wife Beverly dedicated their lives to community, inculcating the same values into their three children - all Central graduates - and seven grandchildren, five of whom attended Central. Love of basketball also was passed down through the generations. His son Philip, Class of 1978, was the captain of the Basketball Team and his grandson Connor, Class of 2009, was also an integral part of Central's team. The Central Hall of Fame salutes a man of talent, generosity and dedication to his alma mater.
